The Importance of Pets
As a non-profit organisation the Australian Companion Animal Council (ACAC) provides a forum for the pet care industry to promote the benefits of socially responsible companion animal ownership to individuals, the community and all levels of government through research, education and advocacy.
Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world with over two thirds of households owning pets. Quite simply, pets are part of the Australian way of life.
Pets are good for our health and good for the health of our communities. The tangible benefits to the physical and mental wellbeing of pet owners have been confirmed by scientific research. Pets provide companionship, encourage exercise and increase social interaction. They give pleasure, teach responsibility, they love and are loved in return. Their owners are healthier and happier than non-owners.
Despite the proven benefits of pet ownership, it’s becoming more difficult to own pets. Urban consolidation, environmental concerns, changing lifestyles and government legislation are creating an environment in which pet ownership is threatened. Because of the considerable benefits pet ownership brings to individuals, the community and the economy, serious attention should be given to the issues limiting pet ownership. The needs of pets, pet owners and non-pet owners are all legitimate. These needs must be appreciated and integrated with society and the environment to ensure that people and pets live harmoniously.

Socially responsible dog owners rewarded
in NSW
|
In NSW, the The Companion Animals Amendment (Outdoor Dining Areas) Act 2010 was passed in June 2010. As long as the cafe owner agrees, dogs can accompany their owner to outdoor dining areas.
To read more about the changes, the Department of Local Government issued a circular to Councils explaining the new rules.
